On May 27, 2010 Black Business Works launched its first networking event in the Queens, New York

On May 27, 2010 Black Business Works launched its first networking event in the Queens area. Over 40 small business owners participated in the launch. Phil Andrews, President of the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. was the special guest speaker. The topic for the Breakfast meeting was "The Importance of belonging to a network". Sherise Patterson is the President of the Queens Division of Black Business Works.

2004, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation reported that Black men and women are 50% more likely to start businesses than their white counterparts. The study also revealed that while millions of Black businesses are launched each year, many of those businesses fail. Entrepreneur Hanif Russell has seen this scenario of start-up and failure in the Black business community play out time and time again in his home state of New York, which also happens to lead the numbers in annual Black business startups.

That’s why in December 2008, frustrated with the lack of support within the Black business community, Russell launched Black Business Works.

Russell says black business failure often occurs because there isn’t a strong business network that focuses on the needs of black-owned businesses. He founded Black Business Works to be that strong network black businesses need to succeed.

Black Business Works facilitates the role of raising the awareness in the black community of black professional business services offered to the black community and beyond.

The organization’s services are designed to help black businesses become financially sustainable and garner support from the black community. Russell believes if more money is spent with black-owned businesses, then black businesses will have a better chance for financial stability and business growth. The community spending approach has been utilized within other communities with much success, with Black Business Works we will see more Black businesses succeed.

INNOVATIVE ENTREPRENEUR OFFERS BUSINESSES MANHATTAN OFFICE SPACE STARTING AT $495

INNOVATIVE ENTREPRENEUR OFFERS BUSINESSES MANHATTAN OFFICE SPACE STARTING AT $495

Owner challenged finding affordable office space for self discovers profitable market
by renting available space to others.

(NEW YORK CITY) – David Rotbard turned his problem into a profit with Micro Office Solutions when he opened innovative rental space to people, who like him, had trouble finding an affordable place to do business in Manhattan.

Rotbard did not set off to launch Micro Office that now has three locations in prime areas of Manhattan, but instead wanted to find a quiet place to work on his children’s book business. In 2002, Rotbard rented space, a desk and chair, at friends’ offices, but soon as he settled in offices, he found himself looking for new spots when friends asked for their spaces back.

“They would eventually need their space back and I would have to move,” said Rotbard of Harlem. “I realized there was a market for people like me.”

Rotbard put his children’s book business on hold when he came up with the idea to rent cubicles to businesses that wanted Manhattan office space, but needed to keep their overhead costs low. Before he even started his business, Rotbard decided to test his idea by posting flyers on 5th Avenue, advertising incredibly low-priced rental space to see if there were any takers. His idea generated so much interest, that he and partners decided to lease 35 workstations in a 5,000 square foot space in the Flatiron District.

“Micro Office is the perfect setting for people laid off, wanting to start their own businesses without working from their kitchen tables at home,” said Rotbard, 32. “We offer practical business solutions that can fit any budget.”

The Flatiron offices at 36 West 20th Street were so successful that Micro Office in 2005 opened its Midtown offices at 1375 Broadway, and in 2007 opened its Chelsea office at 122 West 27th Street.

Today Micro Office has over 300 tenants that include sales representatives, attorneys, graphic designers, event planners and technology firms.

“I have people here who have been with me pretty much since I started,” said Rotbard.

The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce was Micro Office’s first tenant at its Midtown offices.

“We actually signed a five year commitment with Micro Office because we believed in it that much,” Chamber President Nancy Ploeger said of the space leased for seven workers. “We think it’s just a very positive environment because here you are meeting people in so many businesses. It makes for a really good cooperative between the businesses here.”

Micro Office offers extremely competitive rates starting at $495 per month for one furnished workspace, a bargain for Manhattan office space. Packages may include large private office spaces furnished with desks, chairs, and filing cabinets, use of conference rooms, high-speed Internet access, unlimited local and domestic long distance phone service and use of printer, fax, and photocopy machines.

The shared office space also eliminates recurring cleaning services and missed package deliveries with on-site mail handling.

The next phase in affordable office solutions at Micro Office may include cutting edge technology with smart phones that allow tenants to take their desk phone home and to continue receiving business calls.

Rotbard said Micro Office may also create hourly rented therapy spaces for the medical practitioners, and quiet lounges with couches and coffee tables for silent reading.

“People need a place to hang their hat. They can’t do that at Starbucks,” said Rotbard.

Micro Office is now expanding its Midtown office with additional workstations.

“I think now is a good time to expand,” says Rotbard. “Rents have come down, but small business will always be looking for space in New York. It’s about being able to provide more for less.”

For more information on Micro Office Solutions call 212-560-2513.

Pioneer Funding Group Gets Head Start at Micro Office Solutions

FORMER WALL STREET PARTNERS START OWN DISTRESSED HEDGE FUND FIRM IN CHELSEA

Pioneer Funding Group Gets Head Start at Micro Office Solutions

(NEW YORK) - When the stock market soured and the economy went south, Adam Stein-Sapir moved north of Wall Street for ripe opportunities when he and partners decided to start a distressed hedge fund firm focused on investments in corporate chapter 11 bankruptcies.

Stein-Sapir worked for several years making investments for a large hedge fund on Wall Street, but in 2009 he and partners decided to strike off on their own and started Pioneer Funding Group in Manhattan.

“We thought it would be more fun and exciting to commit capital ourselves than to be a cog in a big wheel,” said Stein-Sapir.

Going into business like many new start-ups was a challenge, Stein-Sapir said. First he sub-leased a small space on the upper west side, but the high-priced, tight quarters didn’t allow for enough space for them to work in the fast, frenzied pace they were
used to.

“It wasn’t big enough for all of us. It wasn’t a comfortable fit for us to be in and on the phone at the same time,” said Stein-Sapir.

Stein-Sapir said a friend recommended he check out Micro Office Solutions that provides shared office space for businesses looking to house a small number of people that might ordinarily sublet small office space.

“Before Micro Office, a lot of the spaces I looked at were closets with no windows,” said Stein-Sapir.

Pioneer Funding Group was desperately in need of space to expand after successfully raising third party capital in January. They now have a spacious new corner office with four desks, windows and room to expand.

“With Micro Office, everything is already set up. All you have to do is put a computer on your desk and everything is just plug-and-play,” he said.

Stein-Sapir said what he found attractive about Micro Office is that the space offers T1 phone service with reasonably priced packages, some that include large private office spaces furnished with desks, chairs, and filing cabinets, use of conference rooms,
high-speed Internet access, unlimited local and domestic long distance phone service and use of printer, fax, and photocopy machines. Stein-Sapir said those amenities help keep their overhead costs low.

“Micro Office is an entrepreneurial company like we are,” he said.

Stein-Sapir said the cost savings allowed Pioneer Funding to hire help and they expect to bring one or two more persons onto their team shortly.

Stein-Sapir believes the advantages of Micro Office Solutions also helped position Pioneer Funding Group to work with Mayor Bloomberg’s office, which he said, is making a big push to foster entrepreneurship of financial service companies in New York City. He added Pioneer Funding Group may apply for one of the angel fund rounds from the City of New York, and have been involved in a dialogue between the Mayor’s office and entrepreneurs to make sure New York remains the financial capital of the world.
